FATTY IN THE BACK SEAT

Fifteen-year-old Cuss is not a criminal.  Well, maybe a slight criminal in the state of New York where he accidentally burns down his neighbor’s barn.  It’s not his first fire-related mishap, so a judge tells Cuss, “Behave for the next six months, or you’ll go to jail.”  But for Cuss, behaving is a lot harder than it seems.

Trouble hounds him.  He rescues children from a church fire, only to have authorities accuse him of starting the fire.  While working at a landscaping job, he forgets to follow instructions and winds up smashing a client’s bay window.  The grumpy client threatens to sue.  Then, a mere two weeks before his probation hearing, Cuss confuses the brake and gas pedals on someone’s vintage Porsche and crashes the car through garage doors.  Cuss can almost taste jail food…

BACK TALKING ON THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD

Edited by Deborah M. Prum, this interactive poetry anthology features poets Elizabeth Bohlke, Susan Cunningham, Stephen Hitchcock, Deborah M. Prum and Kaili van Waveren. Their poems are paired with photographs taken by Stuart W. Scott.  His task was to read a poem, determine the response it evoked in him, then find an image which expressed that response.  At the end of each chapter, a poet reads aloud three poems. The result is a splendid combination of words, sounds and images. This book is available for download with iBooks on your iPad, iMac or other iOS device, and with iTunes on your computer.

RATS AND BULLS AND FLYING MACHINES

This is a humorous history of the Renaissance for young adults.  The lively prose is interspersed with over 100 images, including Renaissance art, cartoons, and maps. The book emphasizes the story in history, brings interesting characters to life, and provides plenty of engaging anecdotes.
REVIEWS:
Booklist:  A lively text that hits the high points of history and pauses for enough detail to make them memorable.
Library Journal:  For grades five through ten, beginning with Petrarch’s rediscovering the classical age and ending with Galileo’s trial, this easy-to-read volume covers little more than 300 years of history. And though it rushes headlong through these exciting years, it does it in an informative and entertaining manner.
